Got time off with the kids? Already seen the holiday displays at Homestead? Then truck on down to D.C. for the awesome holiday show at the U.S. Botanic Gardens, right at the foot of the Capitol building. (Closest Metro stop is South Capitol on the Blue Line). And their special holiday displays are up until January 10.
If you visit, the kids will love the many trains, of course. Plant geeks will love the vintage pointsettias. And everyone will marvel at the replicas of DC’s major monuments and sights all covered with genuine plant material. And new this year are two additions to the White House replica – the Obama girls’ swing set made of bamboo, bark, acorn caps and canna seeds, and the First Lady’s veg garden, made of eucalyptus, fern, lichen, rosebuds, wheat, and more.
Free music, too
All this and on select evenings, concerts in the midst of all this leafy beauty. The last performance is by the Frederick Chorale, Tuesday, December 29 from 6 to 8. I’m told the holiday decorations are even more beautiful at night, so I’ll be there with camera and camcorder, hoping to capture some of that festivity for the bleak, dead-of-winter months to come. Hope to see you there.
