Look what’s FREE at Homestead’s Garden Show

by Susan Harris

Just when we could all use a BIG dose of color, color happens to be the theme of this year’s Homestead Garden Show.  Pretty desperate for color myself and eager to hear some admired speakers on hot topics, I’ll be there, and hope you will, too.    (Look for me – I’ll have a “press” badge on, like real reporters!)  Here are the highlights of the Garden Show events coming up March 12-14 and 19-21.  That’s this coming week and the next, and it’s all FREE of charge.

McGrath will be talking about beneficial flowers and getting our lawns off drugs 3/13 and 14

The Roster of Experts include Big Names

Mike McGrath , arguably the top Garden Guru for the Mid-Atlantic area, is covering two important subjects - Beneficial flowers and Getting your Lawn Off Drugs – and I hope to hear both of them.

Graham Rice is a multiple-award-winning author and editor of many books, including the American Hort Society’s Encyclopedia of Perennials, and he’ll be talking about – no coincidence – Perennials!   I heard Graham talk about his favorite perennials for our region last year at Fordhook Farm in PA, and got inspired.  I snapped this photo of him there.

Katy Moss Warner is another big name in the gardening world – and not just for her presidency of the American Horticultural Society.   When she tells us about her favorite color combinations, we can assume she knows what she’s talking about.

Writer Graham Rice will be telling us about perennials Sat 3/20 at noon.

Two speakers from Goldsmith Seeds will be all over the subject of color,  recommending their favorite color combinations that pop, and inspiring us to think “colorscaping” (I’m curious to find out what exactly that IS).

And Homestead’s own Gene Sumi, our Education cooridnator, will take us through the nitty-gritty of gardening in mid-March in his talk about How to Get our Garden Beds Ready for Spring.

What else?

Lots of color, plants, demonstration gardens for design ideas, and a Ladies Night featuring  “premier local vendors”.   All the details about our Garden Show here on the website.
