If you’ve ever watched Home and Garden Television I bet you were a fan of Erica Glasener‘s show “A Gardener’s Diary”. I loved it, and am not alone -there’s a group on Facebook trying to Bring Back Gardener’s Diary. If you haven’t seen the show, past episodes are still available, though at the horribly inconvenient time of 6:30 a.m. on Friday. (Thank you, Tivo!)
But the good news is that Erica’s fans here in Maryland (where she studied horticulture) are being treated to a rare local appearance Tuesday 9/14 at the Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore (7:30 p.m.) and you can bet I’ll be there. I met Erica at the Garden Writers convention in Raleigh last year, and found her refreshingly friendly and unimpressed with her television fame, as evidenced by this photo of her cutting up with Joe Lamp’l (whose new public TV show “Growing a Greener World” is coming to our area soon) and Raleigh garden writer Helen Yoest.
Her talk is sponsored by the Horticultural Society of Maryland and Erica IS an actual horticulturist, but this time she won’t be recommending her favorite plants for fall interest or what-not. She’s giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the show! Here’s the blurb:
Join Horticulturist Erica Glasener as she tells the story of the great gardens, gardeners and plants that she explored and discovered in her 14 years as host of HGTV’s “A Gardener’s Diary.” Erica, who holds a degree in ornamental horticulture from the University of Maryland, is passionate about the people and plants that make gardens fabulous! Horticulture Society Members admitted with membership card. Non-members $10.00. For more information, please call the Horticulture Society at 410-821-5561.
