Scott and Michelle Loose's new patio

Hardscaping is the insider's term for anything in the landscape that's NOT a plant.  So, patios, arbors, fire pits, even swimming pools.  They're the projects most of us wouldn't dare attempt to do ourselves, and for good reason.  When we choose the wrong plant or forget to water it, the loss isn't so great but when projects like steps, retaining walls and waterfalls are performed incorrectly, the mistakes can be costly - and dangerous.  So these are the projects I always recommend be done by professionals - people who've done the project many times and insure their work - not by DIYers like me.  (My use of construction materials starts and ends with making concrete stepping stones).

There's another thing about hardscaping that I'm always going on about - that it can MAKE THE GARDEN, especially turning a bare lot into a usable outdoor space for the family to enjoy.  Take, for example, the backyard make-over of Scott and Michelle Loose of Bowie, MD.  They hired Heather Davidson, one of Homestead's landscape designers, to transform their yard into a space they'd actually USE, especially an entertainment area that would extend from their existing deck.   The yard had plenty of obstacles, including woods, shady areas, and grading problems.

Heather's design solution was to create a paver walkway leading to a generous patio with a long seat wall (with a back for comfort), with a dramatic fire pit as the focal point, a lighting and plantings, of course.  Now, finally, the Looses can entertain friends and family on their patio and on cool nights, enjoy their outdoor fire.  The couple told Heather that the very first night after the fire pit and seat wall were installed they spent the evening enjoying it - despite it being the middle of winter.

This "during" photo shows how barren the site was before landscaping.

The Looses later wrote to Homestead with this rave for Heather's work:

"We wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed working with Heather Davidson on our backyard landscaping project. She exceeded our expectations in the design of our backyard, and was great to work with throughout the entire project. We are extremely impressed with the final product and would absolutely work with Heather again on any future landscaping needs. Homestead Gardens provided the floral arrangements for our wedding over seven years ago, and we are pleased to say that they continue to impress us to this day. Please pass on our thanks to the foreman, the laborers, and the lighting technician."

NOTE:  This job was finished in late winter and all the plantings are brand new, so we don't yet have a true "after" photo, with full-grown plants.  We'll have to use our imaginations to envision the space two or three years from now.  What's visible even in its just-installed condition is the attention to detail, especially in the paver pattern created for the path.  Nice!
