Seasonal Cooking with Rita Calvert~The Local Cook
Homestead Gardens has graciously invited Food Link to common' back and hold their only fundraising event at the Davidsonville store this Saturday eve as the Fall Fest kicks off with Food Link's Harvest Bash.
This year's fundraiser is vital to Food Link's success. By-the-Way, don't even question the weather as I looked at my NOAA weather forecast: CLEAR and SUNNY is the prediction for Saturday! No matter a few drops, the show always goes on at Homestead Gardens!
The $50.00 ticket includes dinner catered by Saucy Salamander, dessert, cocktails, beer and wine. Attendees will enjoy music by the band "Fren-z", a silent auction, photo booth and special discounts will be available at the Homestead Gardens nursery and garden center. Dress is casual.
I spoke with Cathy Bird, Food Link’s executive director, and got some history on how the nonprofit came to be. “Our non-profit is truly an organization of neighbors volunteering to do that which may not be glamorous, but is so necessary. A wide variety of people ultimately benefit from our services: the newly unemployed, young and single parent families, battered women, the elderly, mentally ill, disabled, the working poor and children."
“This small but mighty nonprofit fulfills a need in Anne Arundel County during critical periods for families, babies, seniors, the hungry and the homeless. Cathy is extremely proud of the growth of each program that Food Link offers but especially the way which the Emergency Baby Pantry’s growth has mushroomed."
Food Link Mission
We strive to lead efforts in alleviating hunger in communities by linking vital resources to families and individuals in need.
Established in 1991, our grassroots, nonprofit organization exists as a safety net for the working poor. We have become the last stop when traditional support programs fail or turn them away. No paperwork, no judgements, no rejections and no waiting.
We offer immediate help directly to families and individuals or by assisting caseworkers, clergy and community activists. Donated goods and services are the core of our programs and allow us to support over 100 recipient agencies and charitable organizations.
Since we opened our doors in 1991, we have delivered over 27 million pounds of life sustaining aid since our inception. (We increased from 1.65 in 2009 to 2.1 in 2010.)

How did Food Link come to hold their fundraiser at Homestead Gardens?
“Brian Riddle mentioned he'd welcome us back and that September was a great time for them. So we moved our event from May to September for that reason. For many years, we held our event at Homestead Gardens when Don Riddle was at the helm and always loved the venue.
Homestead is one of the most beautiful venues one could hope to find and everyone there is a delight to work with. They could not be more supportive, helpful or cooperative and always go above and beyond. We feel extremely lucky to be back at Homestead and hope it becomes "home" for our event for the foreseeable future.”
